  • Queensland Reds come out fighting

After the first couple of outings I was wondering whether any of the Aussie pre Test fixtures were going to be anything other than a bunch of no shows. At last in Brisbane of on Saturday we had a contest. Quade Cooper orchestrated attack after attack using the quick ball as potent weapon whilst the Lions ground down the opposition with some fairly solid defence. As just deserts the Reds captain James Horwill has also been confirmed as the Wallabies skipper for the Three-Test series against the British and Irish Lions. Horwill led the Wallabies to Tri-Nations success in 2011 and returns to the leadership role after missing the entire 2012 Test season due to a hamstring injury. The final places in the squad were confirmed on Monday, with troubled utility back Kurtley Beale being joined by Hugh McMeniman, Digby Ioane, Pat McCabe, Peter Kimlin and Scott Sio.

But at last we had a proper competition from the get go although the B&ILs are starting to drop like flies with first the mighty melon (Gethin Jenkins) and now Tommy Bowe on the sick list. Still plenty more in reserve and with both George North and Alex Cuthbert both putting in sterling performances there is no absence of talent out wide.

So my Lions pick for the first test are 15 Leigh Halfpenny, 14 Alex Cuthbert, 13 Brian O'Driscoll, 12 Jamie Roberts, 11 George North, 10 Jonny Sexton, 9 Mike Phillips, 8 Toby Faletau, 7 Justin Tipuric, 6 Sam Warburton, 5 Paul O'Connell, 4 Alun-Wyn Jones, 3 Adam Jones, 2 Rory Best, 1 Mako Vunipola - who is going beat that lot ?
