With the increasing tendency of consumption savvy individuals to choose online shopping, shopping centres and precincts need to do more to impress. In Brisbane, there's movement toward experience-driven shopping experiences, where you'll get a lot more than what you bargained for. And when in Brisbane with Christmas and the party season around the corner you'll undoubtedly want convenient access to all your gifting and fashion needs.

For discerning travellers such as yourself, check out QueensPlaza, Brisbane's premier retail destination, located on Queen Street Mall. QueensPlaza have appropriated cultural items, such as street food stalls and hot dog vendors. This directional approach to shopping centre eating will change the way you look at food courts. And will offer convenient and interesting breaks to your shopping marathon.

Among the food options, is a newly opened Chinese restaurant that regularly sees long lines queuing outside its doors.  It's a really unexpected feature considering our usual shopping mall experiences. Once you've endured the queue, stepping inside will immediately transport you to Shanghai, providing a much needed escape to the Christmas crowds and general craziness.

New Shanghai is also open after retail trading hours for dinner, where I found myself one Friday night. The line may be a constant feature of this food court restaurant but once you're seated the food comes out speedily. You'll find dim sim menu items such as shallot pancake, pan fried pork dumpling and deep fries pastry filled with shallot and ham, as well as mains and desserts. And it's BYO, which you'll appreciate given slightly steep prices of drinks over the bar in Australia.

In general, QueensPlaza is a great place to discover Australian designer fashion all in the one place. One of Australia's top department stores, David Jones, has chosen QueensPlaza for Queensland's flagship store. They have a section of their fashion department dedicated to Australian designer fashion, where you'll find a wide range of brands. Of course you'll find everything else a department store has to offer spanned across three levels. You'll also find Sass & Bide (who humbly began in Brisbane), Mimco, Peep Toe and Zimmerman (find them just outside the plaza from the Adelaide St side entrance).

Plus, there's Mecca Cosmetica (or sister store Mecca Maxima located in the Wintergarden on Queen Street Mall), Australia's only equivalent to international beauty retailers such as Sephora. And for those of you partial to the big brands, inner city shopping wouldn't be complete without Chanel, Louis Vuitton and maybe a bit of Salvatore Ferragamo.

    Happy shopping (and eating)!
