“This is our city, inspired, seduced, elated in summer.”

It’s that time of year, where summer is celebrated throughout Australia and Sydney hosts one of the biggest events of the year, the Sydney Festival! The festival is filled with a huge array of activities and events for all ages. With music, theatre, dance, art, installations and talks, the Festival is a great way to start the year.

In the midst of Hyde Park lies the Festival Village, a perfect place to spend a summers day or night! The Village is home to the Lawn Library, a little oasis crammed full of books and comfy seats to relax and enjoy an outdoor read. Everyone is welcome to bring in their books and swap them for some different ones. You can even take home your favourite book for free!

Sacrilege, a life sized inflatable Stonehenge, also serves as a giant jumping castle for the young and young at heart and can be found at the Festival Village. A session typically lasts for 10 minutes, but 10 minutes of continuous jumping gets tiring (I don’t know how kangaroos manage to jump around all day)!

There are also a variety of food trucks serving sandwiches, hotdogs and yum cha to satisfy food cravings! Gelato Messina have their very own food truck serving mouth watering, unique gelato such as the Yeeeah Dawg (a milk chocolate geloto hot dog served in a warm finger bun with must have condiments – passionfruit ‘mustard,’ raspberry ‘ketchup,’ buttercream ‘mayonnaise’ and coconut ‘onions’) as well as Gelatoffee Apples and Side Show Sundaes!

The Festival Spiegeltent and Circus Ronaldo Tent hosts a variety of ticketed musical and theatrical acts perfect for those looking for further entertainment. Acts include Cat Power, The Staves, Squaring the Wheel, Jazzamatazz! Tom Thum, Lady Rizo, Limbo and Scotch and Soda.

In Darling Harbour, lies an amazing piece of architecture, Merchant’s Store, which allows people to dangle off the windows, scurry up the walls and defy gravity! This interactive installation by Argentinian artist Leandro Erlich provides a great photo opportunity for all.

Sydney Festival is not confined to events in the city, various others are spread across Sydney. A giant inflatable rubber duck, can be found at Parramatta River, there are art projects at Parramatta Town Hall, the FUNPARK (interactive arcade cinema, political rock opera, spontaneous hula hooping sessions) is at Bidwill, there is classical music avaliable at the Symphony in the Domain and there are many more events awaiting your presence! Head on out to the Sydney Festival, embrace the summer and soak up some sunshine, with family and friends.
