The Cradle Mountain Huts Walk has now been in operation for over 20 years and our reputation from the beginning has been second to none.


We explore one of Australia’s most spectacular World Heritage Areas in the Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park while trekking the world famous Overland Track. Each night is spent in the comfort of the only private hut accommodation along the trail. Our guides will prepare an inspired 3 course dinner each night while you sit back and relax with a glass of Tasmanian wine.

The Cradle Mountain Huts are nestled discreetly along the Overland Track some distance off the main trail.

The huts have been strategically placed along the trail to ensure each days walk is manageable and enjoyable. Our itinerary maximizes opportunities for side trips including Mt Ossa (weather permitting), Lake Will and a number of lookouts and waterfalls. Our aim is to provide some creature comforts and support so you can enjoy walking the Overland Track.

Day 1 - Waldheim to Barn Bluff Hut (12km, 7 hours)

Cradle Mountain Huts guests meet at our walkers' base at Quamby Estate at 7.20am (Launceston pick up time is 6.45am from Peppers Seaport Hotel). After a gear check and introductions we journey to Waldheim in Cradle Valley. We then set off on the track by 11am. By lunchtime we have walked through our first section of ancient temperate rainforest, have witnessed the dramatic glacially-carved Crater Lake and the steepest section of the whole Overland Track is behind us. The steep section is mostly stepped and takes us about an hour. It gets us onto Marion's Lookout which (hopefully) offers famous and spectacular views of Cradle Mountain with Lake Dove at its base - worth every step.

If the weather is fine, we stop for lunch by the peaceful Plateau Creek before continuing for about another 4 hours around the base of Cradle Mountain, out along the edge of a spectacular glacial cirque, then dropping into Waterfall Valley which we cross before arriving at our hut at the base of the towering Barn Bluff. Several hours of this day's walk is over an exposed alpine plateau which allows great views on a clear day, but in rough weather the wind howls over the land making for exciting, and sometimes challenging walking conditions.

Day 2 - Barn Bluff Hut to Pine Forest Moor Hut (12km, 6 hours)

The walking today is undulating with a few sections of exposed moorland. There are no large hills and the once notoriously muddy Pine Forest Moor is now a duck board path over the mud! We also offer an additional side trip to Lake Will. We travel across plains where glaciers once sat and slowly moved, scouring out shallow tarns. Now there are plains of button grass with ancient Pencil Pines sitting with their roots in the water. Rising from the moors, the peaks of Cradle Mountain and Barn Bluff are behind us to the north, and the stately Mt Pelion West directly ahead.

Day 3 - Pine Forest Moor Hut to Pelion Plains Hut (10km, 5 hrs)

Today we begin with a long, slow descent around the base of Mt Pelion West down to the Forth River before it plunges into the Lemonthyme Valley. After a break at Frog Flats by the Forth River, we have a long, gentle ascent out of the valley onto the beautiful Pelion Plains with outstanding views of Mt Oakleigh. There are many side trips in the Pelion Plains area with mountains all around, some excellent swimming holes, abandoned copper mines, or simply peaceful and humbling spots to rest quietly.

Day 4 - Pelion Hut to Arm River Valley (14km, 6 hours)

Today we head east, crossing Pelion Plains and following the southern shore of Lake Ayr, mainly wandering through open eucalyptus forests and across button grass plains. We then follow a gradual incline along the Innes Track before having lunch near Wurragarra Creek. From this point the view is dominated by Mount Pillinger and the peaks along the Overland Track. After lunch we pass the still waters of Lake Price before the sharp descent into the Arm River valley to meet the bus. The return trip to Quamby Estate takes us through the Mole Creek Karst National Park and the arts and crafts town of Deloraine.

What to bring

The items below will be packed into your 50 liter pack (provided) and carried by you. If followed correctly, the pack should weigh between 8.5 - 9.5kgs and could weigh as little as 7.5kgs.

  • Lace-up walking boots must have ankle support and threaded soles. We can not over emphasise the importance of appropriate footwear. Walking shoes, sand shoes and similar are not acceptable and boots must be worn in - unfortunately you will be unable to commence the walk without the appropriate footwear.

  • Polar fleece jacket (preferred) or woolen jumper

  • Light jumper (warm)

  • Beanie or balaclava

  • Gloves or mittens

  • Waterproof over-pants - nylon, PVC or Gore-tex

  • Gaiters - long gaiters (just below the knee)

  • Shorts &/or light walking trousers

  • Thermal underwear - long-sleeved top and long johns. Two sets preferred

  • Warm, long pants - evening hut wear

  • Shirts/t-shirts - 3 recommended

  • Socks - 3 pairs recommended

  • Underwear

  • Lightweight footwear - thongs/sports sandals for hut use

  • Sun hat & sunscreen

  • Travel towel or body chamois (light & quick to dry)

  • Water bottle - at least 1 liter

Important : DENIM CLOTHING IS NOT ACCEPTABLE

  • Camera & spare batteries if digital (there is one charging station in each hut which is compatible with a USB & cigarette lighter socket)

  • Light weight foldable day pack (should pack down to pocket size, available for purchase at our walking base)

  • Insect repellent (repellent and torches are provided in each hut)

  • Small mirror (especially if you wear contact lenses)

Tip: Layering of clothing has long been the basis for dressing in the outdoors and the gear list above follows this principle. When the temperature drops, we add another layer of insulation; if it rains, we add a rain shell on top and when it’s warm and dry, we strip off layer.

**Pocket day packs, maps and track notes are available for purchase on the first morning of your walk.

Notes

  • Each trip requires a minimum of four and a maximum of ten guests on each departure. All accommodation is twin share. If the group is full, sharing is with another guest who may be male or female.

  • As long as you exercise regularly and are capable of walking 10km for six days over varied terrain, you’ll be fine! Obviously there are steep sections; however, this is part of the whole experience. Each day there is plenty of time to sit and rest as well as exploring, so you won’t feel rushed.
