Bird Watching tours in Western Australia

We run customised birdwatching tours designed and conducted primarily in the South West region of Western Australia but also in other parts of Australia by request. These range from half-day tempters right through to fully accommodated 16 day expeditions as well as personalised tours looking for particular species or to specific locations.

The South West of Western Australia is home to 13 endemic species: Carnaby's (Short-billed) and Baudin's (Long-billed) Black-Cockatoos, Western Corella, Red-capped Parrot and Western Rosella; Western Wattlebird and Western Spinebill; Red-winged Fairywren, Red-eared Firetail, Western Thornbill and White-breasted Robin and the infamous Noisy Scrub-bird and Western Bristlebird.

In addition there are many endemic sub-species and races to be found of birds such as the Western Whipbird, the (Western) Ground-parrot, (Western) White-naped (or Swan River) Honeyeater, (Western) Rufous Fieldwren, Southern Emuwren and the (Western) Crested Shrike-tit. Other sought-after species found locally include the Western Yellow (Grey-breasted) Robin  and the Rufous Treecreeper.

For all tours, guests are collected from their lodgings between 7:00 and 7:30am and travel by airconditioned 4WD vehicle to various local nature reserves. Cost includes use of binoculars, telescope and field guides.

South West Endemics - 3 or 4 Day Tour

From: Manjimup, Pemberton or Bridgetown (Other towns available on request)

Price:  $400 per first person per day, $100 per additional person per day

This extended tour aims to find all 13 of the South West endemics, but particularly focuses on the 3 notorious "skulkers" (Noisy Scrub-bird, Western Bristlebird and Western Whipbird). For the 4 day Blitz, an extra day is spent in the "mallee" country looking for such species as Malleefowl, Shy Heathwren, Southern Scrub-Robin and Purple-gaped Honeyeater. Best from March to October when there's the ideal chance of seeing  both Humpback and Southern Right Whales. Chalet-style accommodation at Cheynes Beach Caravan Park and all meals (including for the guide) are extra. Depending on the number and configuration of guests and the time of year, the estimated room rate will vary between $50 and $230 per night for 2 or 3 nights.

About The Tour Operator

My passion is birdwatching, whether it be taking other birders to my favorite haunts or out on my own, taking photographs of the wonderful avifauna of Western Australia!  Please have a look at the photo gallery to get an idea of some of the local species. A keen birder from childhood, I moved to Western Australia in 1998 and since then I've been actively involved in the National Bird Atlas Project as a Regional Organiser in the South West.  Previously I spent time in Adelaide where I was a member of the South Australian Ornithological Association and the Australasian Wader Studies Group.
