4 of the biggest sporting events in Australia in 2013 and a round-up of the Sports series so far.

I have spent the past couple of weeks focusing on sporting events in Australia this year concerning rugby, cricket and netball, but thought it would be nice to round this series off with a look at some other sporting events going on in the country that might be of interest to both the Australian locals amongst you, and the tourists!

1. Gold Coast Marathon: this event is otherwise known as the 'airport marathon' after its sponsors - Gold Coast Airport. 2013 marks the 35th anniversary of the marathon and the 11th anniversary of Gold Coast Airport's sponsorship. It is famous for being the flattest and fastest marathon, and offers several varieties of event, including half marathons, 10km, 5.7 km and Junior events, making it an occasion to attract, encourage and support a wide variety of people, from locals to visitors, from professionals to charitable do-gooders. This year the various events tied to the marathon will be held on July 6th and 7th. Entries only close on July 5th, so there's still plenty of time to sign up and have a go and what promises to be a fantastic weekend of running!

2. City2Surf: for those who are extra keen on running, or just 'fun'-running, there is another opportunity to do such an event! City2Surf starts in Sydney's Hyde Park and finishes on the spectacular Bondi Beach. The run is sponsored by Westpac and is 14km long. The run will be on 11th August, and is one of the largest running events around, attracting not only a massive participation response, but also an incredibly large level of support from locals and visitors turning out to watch and support the run.

3.Australian Rules Football: at the moment, the Australian teams are battling it out to see who in September will claim the title as winner of the Australian Football League final. Tens-of-thousands will fill Melbourne Cricket Ground September 28th and thousands more will watch the match on television. There may be a few lucky seats spare in the MCG, but you'd better be quick!

4. Melbourne Carnival Cup: For horse-racing-lovers everywhere, this is an event not to be missed. The races are held in Melbourne in the first week of November this year, and will be as classy as ever in its 153rd year. Tickets are sure to be available soon.

5. Finally there are a few other sporting events from previous years that will be major attractions later on this year, and are worth keeping an eye out for: the Gold Coast 600 (motor-racing); Perth International Golf Championship; and the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race - to name a few! Keep those eyes peeled!

Wherever you go in Australia this year, there is bound to be something sporty going on nearby and that is bound to be worth a watch - from my experience, Australians are very competitive, but also very talented and respectable sportspersons, and this alone makes it worth seeing, and who knows, it may even inspire a new sporting desire in you too!
